DESIGN+SUSTAINABILITY

Exhibition 9.9. – 2.10.2021 by Aalto University Design Factory

Design brings a human-centered approach to change and development – just what we need to make sustainable solutions a part of our everyday lives. Based on an Aalto University Design Factory study of more than 100 organizations, Design+Sustainability takes stock of what harnessing design to tackle sustainability looks like in practice today. “Creative practices are not just for creative industries and innovation centers. Design can help to improve sustainability and viability in all fields. We aim to spark a broader consideration of opportunities for sustainable design, as now is the right time to build the foundation for the post-pandemic future,” explains Professor of Practice Tua Björklund from Aalto University.

The exhibition offers insights and examples of how design can advance sustainability, ranging from manufacturing to retail and consumer goods to public services. Explore bite-sized insights on what are the most common issues and tactics tackled in sustainability through design, and get inspired by examples of improving environmental, social and economical sustainability. “Through the installation, we wanted to offer a visual, easy-to-approach array of the most interesting insights from our research findings,” notes designer and art director Anna Kuukka from the Design Factory research team. The exhibition at Glasshouse Helsinki has been constructed using UPM’s biobased material solutions, and it is complemented by an online report available here.

Aalto University Design Factory is an experimental platform for advancing co-creation across different fields and organizations, bridging theory and practice. Since its founding in 2008, it has grown into a network of 34 Design Factories across the globe. Design+Sustainability is a multidisciplinary research project investigating how design and creative practices can bring new approaches to shaping a sustainable future in organizations. The research project is enabled by Aalto University and UPM.

Design+Sustainability is part of the array of new exhibitions at Glasshouse Helsinki gallery 9.9. – 2.10.2021. View all the details here.

    ORIGINS 10.6.–20.8.2022

When we think of origins, what comes to mind? The brief for the course Product Design in Ceramics asked students to design and produce an artifact reflecting on origins that included a traditional ceramics manufacturing technique (e.g. pinching, coiling, slabbing, throwing, slip casting) as well as a 3D-printed method (delta print extrusion or stereolithography). Students explored the idea of origins from different perspectives ranging from cultural and ethnic origins to personal histories, to the origins of humanity, Earth, and the universe.
