Mifuko was founded in 2009 by two Finnish designers, Minna and Mari. From the beginning, they were inspired to combine modern design with traditional Kenyan handcraft as was fair trade. Mifuko is a social enterprise that fuses Nordic design with African handicraft. The products bring joy and utility to customers while empowering women in rural areas of Kenya. This is the essence of the company’s social impact. The materials used in Mifuko products are locally sourced from Kenya, both to promote sustainable Kenyan industries and to minimize transportation emissions.  

Mifuko is a social enterprise and  World Fair Trade Organization certified member which fully practices Fair Trade. To be a WFTO member, an enterprise or organisation must demonstrate they put people and planet first in everything they do. Mifuko Trust was founded in 2012 as a non-profit organization to improve the welfare of the artisan’s communities and fight against poverty.
