Alphabets: M for Moral

By Glasshouse Helsinki

Why moral? In recent decades, many people have said yes to individual hedonism leading to ever increasing consumption and unsustainable growth. At the same time, it has become evident that this way of living has come to its end. Signals demanding fundamental change have been visible even before the pandemic but now, at the latest, it is time to change direction.

"Looking through moral lens helps us to ask right questions, re-think our lives and make good decisions."

However, it is hard to start without a starting point. Moral thinking is needed when striving towards change. When facing global ecological and social problems we need an idea of global ethics and without a doubt sustainability is a crucial part of universally shared values.

Moral is a big word as it is all about good and bad, right and wrong. As moral is such a heavy concept it seems like we have been unwilling to evaluate thingsmorally. In addition, it is problematic that moral is often confused with moralizing. In fact, as much as we need moral we must avoid moralizing.

We can’t manage without internalized understanding about what is right and what is wrong. Moral is also about deeds both on micro and macro level from individual consuming to production chains as well as institutional and political decision making.

Looking through moral lens helps us to ask right questions, re-think our lives and make good decisions. Living a meaningful life demands making good to others and tothe planet itself. Fortunately, this also brings joy to oneself.‍
