Let’s jazz things up – We Jazz vinyl pop-up opens in Glasshouse Helsinki
By Glasshouse Helsinki
Part of Glasshouse Helsinki’s mission is to connect the different genres of art and design. The latest addition to the Aleksanterinkatu store is a We Jazz vinyl pop-up. We Jazz main man Matti Nives is as excited about the visit as we are.
“When I first heard about Glasshouse Helsinki and the idea that something as uncommercial as this will be opened in such a central location, I almost did not believe it. Now we are happy to be a part of it”, he says.
"There are many records that cannot be bought anywhere else in Helsinki."
What is the pop-up like? Not only jazz. Matti Nives tells us that the curated selection of records is “like a postcard” from the We Jazz Records main store in Vallila.
“It is a selection of a few hundred records, we made it compact and high-class. There are many records that cannot be bought anywhere else in Helsinki”, he decribes the pop-up store.
As We Jazz is also a record label, Nives says that the collection naturally features records from the label’s own artists.
Matti’s hot tip from the pop-up store? The records from Analog Africa label. “It is something a little different, like African folk music cumbia for example. And the records have great liner notes ”, he says.
Réka Kiraly is a visual storyteller, an illustrator and a founding member of Etana Editions, an independent picture book publisher. Now Kiraly has created the first artwork inside Glasshouse Helsinki’s store on Aleksanterinkatu.
In 2020 the international traffic went to a standstill for the Finnish capital and the rest of the world. Nobody knows what 2021 is going to look like but one thing is certain.
